Fun-fact .. that you should not ignore. This is the first antsle which has found itself in DK and still working when you read this (no one can ever take it from me). This is the ‘antsle one’, now thereis a newer model / version available. The first model has become a collectors item that is worth millions ;-)

What I have live at antsle one at this moment:

  • 14 websites.
  • 7 webshop / ecommerce sites. (Woo, Prestashop and Magento)
  • 1x sandstorm.io installation (1.5 gb RAM)
  • 6x Install of syncthing (see here how to do it)
  • 3x Paperwork and 2x Laverna installs.

Therefore, the choice fell on antsle one

Antsle themselves mention that it allows for easy hosting from home and it has low powerconsumption. Everything promised on their website remains true. Their server enables easy hosting from home, if thats what you want. However, one should consider whether you have enough bandwidth to do it in a serious magnitude and with enough stability.

How do I use antsle and sleep great at night?

My solution was to maximize my home connection and assigning AWD hosting (really cheap) in front (you can see an older version of the nginx.vhost file I use on AWS by following the link below. -> The current nignx.vhost will come up at some point.

My solution was to maximiThe current nignx.vhost will come up at some point. It allows us to use AWS (could also be GCP, Linode, Kyup, DO etc.) to take the most load from the antsle server. With this setup, I can expect load-time of less than two seconds on virtually any platform despite hosting from an pretty basic internet connection. (Depends on whether varnish is on, CMS, the choice of theme and modules, etc.). It is pardon the expression, fuicking great.

It cost me only about 300 kroner (~ $33 US) a month for AWS to have a professional hosting solution that kicks ass this way.

Is this setup necessary?

If you just have one or a small number of blogs, this approach will not be necessary. You can easily accomplish your goals with an antsle, a good router and a great firewall like pfsense. - The only thing missing is to buy a domain and point it at your antsle.

Please notice that the cloud also gives this site a big speed boost so if only an antsle itself, site load might have been a bit slower. CDN would for sure have made everything more speedy but I´m trying to hold costs down.

By the way, a little extra info

Should my antsle, for any reason, freeze, make an unscheduled reboot, or power off, or I press the wrong thing, (if the world has gone under, then notify me). AWS takes over until the associated antlet is started up again via the web interface (antsleOS), however, this is likely to take place automatically.

What is an antsle and who are they as a company

I knew nothing about them or what they actually stood for before I accidentally came across them on Indiegogo (alternative to Kickstarter as you probably know). With the antsle you get full control over your own code, all your data under your own rules!

You can with few steps host a WordPress blog -from home- that can be accessed from around the world or you can start a private file server without prying eyes or maybe you want a complete mail server. You may also want to set up an open source LastPass alternative so that your logins are as safe as possible.

antsle has came to light on the desire for freedom and the desire that you should have control over your own websites and files. Remember that if you dont pay for a product or service, then its ‘you’ there is the product sold. Companies Google can share your information and they do it. Accordingly to the antsle team, they says, they want to enable web hosting from home, on your own server, and make it as easy as 1-2-3.

Where is antsle right now and what is their goal?

  1. Provide many options in terms of hardware upgrades.
  2. Make it super simple to create and manage virtual servers.
  3. 0dB noise, forever!
  4. Super energy efficient. (In fact, so effective that I could keep antsle alive throughout 22 hours of the first test on pure battery (UPS).
  5. High security from top to bottom.
  6. Strength enough to run hundreds of virtual servers. (Depends on what)
  7. Appealing and great to have on display.

Upgrade your antsle one

It´s important to keep your antsle up to day and all you need to do is:.

  1. Login to your antsle via ssh (root@myantsle.local) - If using PuTTY, just type myantsle.local and connect
  2. Run the upgrade script: upgrade-antman (or antsleOS depending on what´s needed)
  3. Point your browser to “myantsle.local” and hit the browser’s reload. Enjoy!

Delete the old stuff you don´t need anymore

The antsle one is not your mom. Kkeep it clean and neat after your updates. In the long run you will be happy about doing this and it´s easy. Just run a ls and then rm -what-you-want-to-remove-.

Antsle got IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface)

The choosen mortherboard from Supermicro comes with IPMI support and thats great!

All you need to do is scan for it or look it up (using your router or switch if it´s support this). Using ip:80 you can access it´s loginpage. All you here need to do is typing “ADMIN” as username and the same goes as password.

The screen you should be looking at should be like the one below:

From here you can access a lot of handy functions like what hardware is inside and sensor readings. And of course, power on or off the computer system.

This is perfect for, lets say a office location (far away) or maybe its at a datacenter few hours away from home. Remember that IPMI also allows you to forward the console (usecase: virtual mouse, keyboard and remotely attach a USB).
